What should you do if water is spreading?
Stop the water and the energy source first, then call. Close the cold-water valve on top of the heater, turn the gas control to OFF or switch off the heater's breaker, and open a hot faucet to relieve pressure.
If the cold valve won't stop the flow, close the home's main shut-off. Stay out of standing water near outlets or the electrical panel, and move belongings away from the heater. Our emergency leak guide covers each step in more detail.
If you smell gas
Leave the building without operating switches, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
What to have ready when you call
- Where the water is coming from: top, side or bottom
- Gas or electric, and the capacity on the label
- Whether the water and fuel are already shut off
- Your address, plus gate codes or access notes
- A photo of the rating label, if you can take one
